As part of the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra’s second national tour, currently underway, the ensemble will appear at Carnegie Hall on October 7, where it will present a program of works by Mozart, Piazzolla, Michael Abels, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, conducted by Damon Gupton. Also performing at the concert will be the Harlem Quartet and laureates of the Sphinx Competition for Black and Latino string players. At the Carnegie Hall event, Roberta Flack will also be presented with the Sphinx Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her artistic excellence and extensive career in music education; Flack recently opened the free Roberta Flack School of Music at the Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx, New York. The Sphinx Chamber Orchestra will complete its tour on October 24 at California’s Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. The Sphinx Chamber Ensemble is part of the Sphinx Organization, whose mission is to build diversity in classical music.
