In Sunday’s (3/10) St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Missouri), Sarah Bryan Miller writes, “David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra are on the move again. With memories of September’s acclaimed European tour hardly faded, they’re headed in the other direction—back to California, where they had a successful tour in the spring of 2010. They’ll perform four concerts over the course of the week, in Davis, Costa Mesa, Palm Desert and Santa Barbara. This isn’t just any tour, though: In an innovative three-day residency with the Mondavi Center at the University of California-Davis, members of the SLSO will also do community concerts and coaching with elementary, secondary and high school students, as well as a side-by-side rehearsal with the UC-Davis Symphony Orchestra, and performing in a hospital and senior center. “What’s really nice about this is that it’s a return engagement” in Palm Desert and Davis, Robertson says. … The residency came about because of a $600,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to expand classical music audiences, says Don Roth, Mondavi Center executive director. Roth, who was president and CEO of the SLSO from 1998 to 2001, immediately thought of bringing the orchestra to UC-Davis.”
