In Tuesday’s (10/11) Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York), Melinda Johnson writes, “The future of symphonic music in Central New York will be addressed at the ‘Summit on the Symphony’ Sunday at Hamilton College in Clinton. Heather Buchman, associate professor of music at Hamilton, is organizing the summit, inviting representatives of area music groups and colleges. … She said the summit, closed to the public, will explore the basic question of ‘What do we all need?’ ” Buchman expects twenty participants representing several area colleges, universities, and arts organizations. “Representatives of musicians from the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra also will attend. The summit follows collapse of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in spring and the creation this summer of a music organization, the Syracuse Philharmonic. … Representatives of Syracuse Philharmonic have been invited to Sunday’s summit. Buchman said the future of symphonic music in Central New York is a regional issue that extends beyond the city of Syracuse and Onondaga County. She said the summit is not attempting to be competitive with the Syracuse Philharmonic’s efforts.”
