In Tuesday’s (8/30) West Australian (Perth), William Yeoman writes, “Surfing and dance animate the Australian Chamber Orchestra 2012 program, with a spectacular multi-media exploration of the North-West coast and an innovative reinterpretation of baroque dance by the Sydney Dance Company sending shock waves rippling across one of this innovative chamber orchestra’s most exciting seasons to date. … Two mighty pillars support a seven-program season that spans the continent: one located in WA, the other in Sydney. In July [ACO Director Richard] Tognetti leads a band of intrepid musicians and surfers from Darwin to Perth via Ningaloo Reef to explore the relationship between surfing, music, desert and ocean. The result will be The Reef, a multi-media performance piece featuring photographs and footage by Jon Frank and music by Grandage, Crumb, Shostakovich and Bach performed by didgeridoo player Mark Atkins, Richard Tognetti and the young musicians of ACO2. … The second pillar—and you’ll have to travel to Sydney if you want to experience it, but it’ll be worth it—is a long-awaited collaboration between two of Australia’s premiere arts organisation: ACO and the Sydney Dance Company.”
