In Wednesday’s (8/28) Limelight (Sydney, Australia), Jason Blake writes, “The Sydney Symphony Orchestra‘s 2025 season is launched, an offering of 44 concert programs featuring a host of Australian and international artists, 11 of whom make their SSO debuts. SSO Chief Conductor Simone Young will lead the orchestra in six major programs during the year, beginning with Mahler’s Third Symphony (19–22 February) and concluding with Beethoven’s Ninth (26–29 November)…. ‘We seem to have established a nice tradition,’ said Young of her decision to open the season with Mahler’s monumental Third Symphony. Her SSO Season 2024 opened with Mahler’s Fifth; 2023 with his First. ‘When you’re on to a good thing, stick with it.’… From 28 February–2 March, Young will lead the SSO in an exploration of lesser-known works by great composers including Elgar and Vaughan Williams…. Young is also excited to continue her exploration of the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ work in 2025, this time his Third Symphony…. To end the year, Young will turn her attention to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (26–29 November) and the world premiere of a work by First Nations composer and Kalkadunga man William Barton.”
