A report late Friday (9/23) on the website of WJBF ABC News Channel 6 (Georgia) states, “It’s news that many people have been waiting for. The announcement was made Friday that the Symphony Orchestra of Augusta (SOA) will take over ownership of the Miller Theater. The Broad Street facility has been empty for nearly 30 years. Joe Huff, SOA president: ‘So, I am pleased to announce today in a special called meeting last night…the symphony unanimously agreed to move forward with this project.’ It’s big news for the Symphony Orchestra of Augusta now having a permanent place to call home. … It’s been about a 4-year process of studies, meetings, and fundraisers before the deal was given the final okay. … The Symphony received the approval from the Augusta Commission and the city, which includes $5.2 million in Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars to renovate the theater. SOA must also raise $1.3 million. While no official timeline on construction has been set officials expect construction to begin in the near future.” Read SymphonyNOW’s report on Symphony Orchestra Augusta and the Miller Theater here.
