Registration is now open for the 2014 Take A Stand Symposium, which will be held in Los Angeles from February 20 to 22. The third annual El Sistema-focused symposium—hosted by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in partnership with the Longy School of Music at Bard College, and Bard College—will cover how to use El Sistema-inspired practices to nurture student leadership and citizenship. Among those scheduled to speak are Los Angeles Philharmonic President and CEO Deborah Borda; Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras; Antonio Damasio, a professor of neuroscience and director of the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California; Leon Botstein, president of Bard College and music director of the American Symphony Orchestra; and Karen Zorn, president of the Longy School and vice president of Bard College. Take A Stand is a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Longy School of Music of Bard College, and Bard College. A three-day National Leadership Forum for Young Musicians will be held concurrently with the symposium, during which 24 musicians will work on a leadership action plan for students in El Sistema-inspired programs in the U.S. More information is available at laphil.com/education/yola/2014-take-stand-symposium.
