Soprano Julia Bullock, cellist Gabriel Cabezas, and pianist/educator/entrepreneur Lara Downes are the three recipients of the fifth annual Medals of Excellence from the Sphinx Organization. Each artist receives a $50,000 grant for career development and will be honored at a black-tie dinner in Washington, D.C. on March 16, 2016. Sphinx’s $50,000 career grants have been given annually since 2012 to emerging classical artists of color who “demonstrate artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and potential for leadership.” The Detroit-based Sphinx Organization was founded in 1996 by violinist Aaron Dworkin to encourage the participation of blacks and Latinos in classical music. Sphinx’s 2016 annual conference will take place in Detroit from February 5-7, 2016; for more information about SphinxCon, click here.
