In Thursday’s (1/10) San Antonio Express-News (Texas), Deborah Martin writes, “Musician Molly Norcross pauses when asked how many auditions she’s done over the past few years. … ‘This is probably my fifth year of taking auditions; I think it was 20.’ … Late last year, the 25-year-old won a slot with the San Antonio Symphony as associate principal horn. She played her first concert last month, taking part in the Holiday Pops performances; she moved here last week and will play her first classical concerts with the symphony this weekend. Here’s the unlikely part: She’s coming on board with a couple of friends who are also recent symphony hires. Norcross, English horn and oboe player Jennifer Berg and flutist Martha Long all played together in the Quintuplets wind ensemble as part of a class when they were students at the New England Conservatory. … ‘We get hundreds of applicants for these positions, and so the idea that these three players all happen to be coming from the same place is a testament to the great training they’ve had,’ said David Filner, interim president and CEO of the symphony. The fact that they have played together is a big check in the ‘plus’ column, too, Filner said.”
