At the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, “his three nights of concerts … centered on Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (June 28-30) will mark the latest in Gimeno’s string of sneak peeks on the podium before he officially begins his music directorship of the TSO in the fall of 2020. Q: What do you find is unique about working with a Canadian orchestra? Gimeno: Indigenous music…. I’m still in the process of getting to know it. Q: What do you enjoy about a first encounter with an orchestra? Gimeno: It’s like the energy between two people. It depends on both, but you can’t think too hard about it, or you’re already influencing the atmosphere. Q: What are the best ways of connecting the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with the city’s communities? Gimeno: We work in several directions. One is the [Toronto Symphony] Youth Orchestra, and our education programs…. It’s surprising how much [kids] can take in terms of complexity…. We have to go to the people … visiting and interacting with kids in different parts of Toronto.”
