In California, the USC Thornton School of Music’s Alice Schoenfeld—a long-time professor of violin instruction and performance—has committed $3 million to finance a renovated space that will now serve as a concert hall. The 3,700-square-foot hall, which was constructed this summer and dedicated on October 28, will be known as the Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld Symphonic Hall. Alice Schoenfeld’s sister Eleonore Schoenfeld was a cellist and USC Thornton professor from 1959 until her death in 2007; the two sisters performed for many years as the Schoenfeld Duo. The newly refurbished hall was previously used by the USC School of Cinematic Arts; it is the first dedicated orchestra rehearsal hall in Thornton’s history and will house the USC Thornton Symphony and Wind Ensemble. The hall also has audio- and video-recording capabilities as well as new lighting and suspended flooring for sound isolation.
