The second installment of the Utah Symphony | Utah Opera’s Florencia Festival celebrating Latin American music and the arts will take place on January 18 with a concert of Spanish opera and zarzuela highlights at the Sorenson Unity Center in Salt Lake City. The festival from December 2012 through April 2013 includes exhibits and performances at the Natural History Museum of Utah and the Salt Lake Public Library, which are among the partners for the festival. Other partners include the University of Utah School of Music, the Madeleine Choir School, and the Utah Humanities Council. The festival opened on December 10 with a lecture-recital at Abravanel Hall featuring music of Astor Piazzolla. Events scheduled through April include Daniel Catán’s opera Florencia en el Amazonas performed by the USUO; a dance-themed program, “Ballroom with a Twist” with the Utah Symphony and professional dancers; a family concert featuring music by Piazzolla, Revueltas, Marquez, Fernandez, Bernstein, and Copland, with animation by Paul Glickman and Tamarind King; and Stephen Paulus’s children’s opera Shoes for the Santo Niño, featuring the Utah Opera and musicians from the Madeleine Choir School. The Florencia Festival is the tenth annual cultural education festival presented by Utah Symphony | Utah Opera.
