In Thursday’s (5/1) Burlington Free Press (Vermont), Brent Hallenbeck writes, “In April of 1964, a new organization filled with young classical musicians performed its first concert at Hunt Middle School in Burlington. Fifty years later, the Vermont Youth Orchestra is not only still making music, it serves more than 500 young performers from Vermont as well as the neighboring states of New York and New Hampshire. In recent years, VYO musicians have practiced, practiced, practiced their way to Carnegie Hall as well as performances in Prague, Hong Kong and Paris—and in Vermont, of course. The VYO celebrates its golden anniversary with two concerts this weekend. A few music aficionados with ties to the VYO took the time to write short remembrances for the Burlington Free Press of their favorite moments with the organization.” The article includes commentary and reminiscences from alumnus Soovin Kim, a professional violinist who also serves as artistic director of the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival; former Music Director Troy Peters, who is now music director of the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio; and current VYO member Eileen O’Grady, a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School.
