“In decades past, a woman on the podium would raise eyebrows. Today it’s more of a sense of celebration,” says Harry Smith in a Sunday (1/3) segment on NBC’s Today Show spotlighting Los Angeles Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The segment features rehearsal footage and an interview with Gražinytė-Tyla. “After a kids concert here, we were having a Q&A with children and their mothers, and some of those mothers would come to me and say afterwards, ‘it was so great for our daughters to see you!’ ” says Gražinytė-Tyla. Describing what she most likes about her work conducting musicians, Gražinytė-Tyla says, “It’s a moment when together we find a sound we all are astonished about: ‘This is how this music can sound, this is how we can play. This feeling of sharing this miracle in that moment is the most precious thing.’ ”
