North Carolina’s Winston-Salem Symphony has announced details of its first Discovery Concerts for Kids concert of the 2009-10 season, “Play Ball! Sport and Music,” on September 19. The afternoon of activities at K.R. Williams Auditorium on the campus of Winston-Salem State University will include performances of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” Peter Schickele’s “Sportcaster’s Guide to the Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony,” a musical version of “Casey at the Bat,” and a medley of college fight songs. The event, designed for families with children aged 4 to 13, will also include appearances by local sports personalities and team mascots; children are encouraged to wear their favorite team colors, and activities will include an instrument petting zoo, storytelling, and a “conductor’s corner with Conductor Bob” (Music Director Robert Moody). The orchestra’s two other family concerts during the 2009-10 season are “Pirates on the High Seas” and “The Winston-Salem Symphony Circus Comes to Town.”
