“British writer, violinist, and broadcaster Clemency Burton-Hill is to become the first ‘creative director, music and arts’ for [New York City] classical radio station WQXR in September,” reports Taylor Grant in Monday’s (6/4) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “As the host of BBC Radio 3’s Breakfast Show, Burton-Hill has earned a place as one of the U.K.’s most important arts and music broadcasters. She has also presented live concerts … and hosted the Royal Opera House’s live global broadcasts. Burton-Hill is also co-founder of the chamber ensemble Aurora Orchestra and a co-creator/co-curator of the Interplay Festival in Stockholm. She has written two novels and her articles have appeared in The Economist, the Financial Times, the Guardian, and others. At WQXR, Burton-Hill will oversee development of new digital content, live events for the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, and other programming initiatives, as well as host live broadcasts. Noting how ‘digital platforms are evolving alongside a renewed interest in the live experience,’ Burton-Hill commented, ‘I believe we have an opportunity—and an obligation—to cultivate and engage new audiences through inventive programming that not only supports our mission, but champions the artists and institutions’ that support it.”
