The Grammy Foundation has announced nominees for its 2021 awards, to be broadcast January 31 on CBS TV. Recordings nominated for best orchestral performance, given to the conductor and orchestra, are Aspects of America—Pulitzer Edition (Oregon Symphony, Carlos Kalmar); Concurrence (Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Daníel Bjarnason); Copland: Symphony No. 3 (San Francis-co Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas); Ives: Complete Symphonies (Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel); and Lutosławski: Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 (Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hannu Lintu). Best chamber music/small ensemble performance nominees include the Pacific Quartet (Contemporary Voices), Brooklyn Rider (Healing Modes), Place Orchestra (Ted Hearne: Place), Devonté Hynes & Third Coast Percussion (Hynes: Fields); and the Dover Quartet (Schumann Quartets). The Experiential Chorus and Orchestra’s recording of Ethel Smyth’s The Prison is among nominees for best classical solo vocal album. The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus are nominees for best opera recording. Best contemporary classical composition nominees include the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s recording of Thomas Adès’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, with soloist Kirill Gerstein; the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus’s recording of Richard Danielpour’s The Passion of Yeshua; the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Florentine Opera Chorus’s recording of Carlisle Floyd’s Prince of Players; and the Nashville Symphony’s recording of Christopher Rouse’s Symphony No. 5. Best choral performance nominees include Alexander Kastalsky’s Requiem with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s among the performers, and Paul Moravec’s Sanctuary Road featuring the Oratorio Society of New York Orchestra and Chorus. An album featuring Michael Tilson Thomas’s From the Diary of Anne Frank and Meditations on Rilke, with the San Francisco Symphony and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, is among nominees for best classical compendium.
