The Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Rodney Marsalis’s Philadelphia Big Brass Band will perform joint concerts on March 14 and 15, marking the 150 years since the end of the American Civil War. The “Brothers on the Battlefield” program at the Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown, Maryland will feature a staged production wrapping in a multimedia presentation and music ranging from pre-Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement and later years. Selections will include Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, excerpts from Bernstein’s West Side Story, and an Earth Wind and Fire medley. Also on the program are “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Amazing Grace,” “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Trumpeter Rodney Marsalis also serves as principal trumpet with Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and artist in residence at Temple University.
