Composer David Hertzberg has been awarded the American Composers Orchestra’s $15,000 Underwood Commission for 2015. Hertzberg, who will write a new work for the ACO to be premiered during the 2016-17 season, was chosen from among seven finalists following the ACO’s performance of his Spectre of the Spheres at the orchestra’s annual New Music Readings this spring in New York City. Carl Schimmel won the Audience Choice Award, following the ACO’s performance at the Readings of his Two Variations on Ascent into the Empyrean. Schimmel has been commissioned to compose an original mobile phone ringtone made available to all who voted at the event. ACO Artistic Director Derek Bermel oversaw the New Music Readings, which were led by ACO Music Director George Manahan, with Gabriela Lena Frank and composer Kevin Puts as mentor composers.
