On November 6, the Utah Symphony will give the world premiere of Andrew Norman’s percussion concerto Switch, featuring Colin Currie as soloist. Music Director Thierry Fischer will lead the program at Abravanel Hall, which also features Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 as part of a two-year Mahler symphony cycle in homage to Maurice Abravanel, who recorded all Mahler’s symphonies during his tenure as music director of the Utah Symphony from 1947 to 1979. The orchestra will perform Switch again in April at Carnegie Hall, and will also record the piece, to be released in spring 2016. Describing his concerto, Norman says, “The percussionist’s many instruments act as triggers, turning other players on and off, making them play forward and backward, and causing them to jump to entirely different worlds.” In December the Utah Symphony will also perform and record commissioned world premieres by Augusta Read Thomas and Nico Muhly.
