Wednesday’s (9/16) News and Observer (Raleigh, North Carolina) reports, “The [North Carolina] Symphony announced Tuesday that it has hired an associate conductor, Sarah Hicks, who is currently with the Minnesota Orchestra and a staff conductor at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Hicks replaces Joan Landry, whose three-year position as assistant conductor ended this year with the conclusion of the season. The new title reflects Hicks’ experience with a larger orchestra. The New York Times recently mentioned her as part of ‘a new wave of female conductors in their late 20s through early 40s.’ Her debut in a Raleigh and Chapel Hill classical series will be in January.” Grant Llewellyn serves as the North Carolina Symphony’s music director.
