On May 18, the Spokane Symphony will co-present its free annual “Music Heals” concert together with the Spokane Tribe of Indians in Wellpinit, Washington. The concert will take place at the Spokane Tribal Pow-Wow Grounds in Wellpinit. Assistant Conductor Jorge Luis Uzcátegui will conduct the two-hour concert, which will feature theater by Wellpinit students, Salish songs, drumming and dance. The Spokane Symphony will perform movements from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”), Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” and “Mambo” from Bernstein’s West Side Story, among other selections. The Spokane Symphony works regularly with the Spokane Tribal Elders to bring music education and traditional Native American musical arts and storytelling to K-12 public-school students in the Wellpinit School District, located on tribal lands.
