The Bravo! Vail Music Festival in Colorado is expanding its education offerings with a new string instrument program for local elementary school students in grades 2 to 5, beginning in September 2018. The program came about in response to limited opportunities for students in Vail, which has no youth orchestra, and where middle-school and high-school orchestra programs do not offer linear curricular development from year to year. The new program will offer 30 weeks of after-school instruction, with scholarships available. Coordinating with local music educators and private instructors, Bravo! Vail will offer a graduated, traditional approach to string instrument instruction. Classes will be limited to no more than eight students and will be offered in several locations from Vail to Gypsum. The program is modeled on Bravo! Vail’s After-School Piano Program, introduced in 2009, which provides lessons to 140 children annually. Bravo! Vail, concluding its 31st summer season of performances this week, features residencies by four orchestras: the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
