Canadian composer EMILIE LEBEL has been named affiliate composer at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. During her two-year residency, LeBel will create two works for the TSO, the first to premiere in January 2019. She will also participate in educational work as part of the TSO’s community-engagement programs. LeBel succeeds Jordan Pal, who was affiliate composer from September 2015 to August 2018. LeBel’s compositions have been performed and recorded by, among others, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Cecilia String Quartet, Plumes Ensemble, Arditti Quartet, Land’s End Ensemble, Black House Collective, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Onyx Trio, and Winnipeg New Music Festival. She completed a doctorate in composition at the University of Toronto, a BFA and MA in music at York University, and an honors diploma in audio engineering at Toronto’s Harris Institute for the Arts. In July 2018, she began as assistant professor of composition at MacEwan University, having previously taught at other Canadian and U.S. universities.
