On January 9, Ohio’s Columbus Symphony Orchestra will perform six original compositions by winners of the orchestra’s first SCORE competition, during a free Happy Hour Concert led by Music Director Rossen Milanov at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus. The selected works are by composers either originally from Ohio or who are current residents of the state; current students in Ohio; or graduates of an Ohio university. The six works are Discord by Nabil Abad, a student at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music; Impulse by Martin Hebel and Vinyl by Charles Peck, both graduates of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music; Andromeda by Ramsey Sadaka, an Ohio State University graduate; Flashing Lights by Jiří Trtík, a student at the Cleveland Institute of Music; and Blooming in Winter’s Long Dark Night by Meng Wang, a student at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. The six works were chosen from 55 submissions by a panel of judges including Milanov. The competition was held in collaboration with the Johnstone Fund for New Music, based in central Ohio.
