“There are composers exploring the boundaries of the possible … in ‘Re: Sound,’ a festival of new and experimental music presented by Uncommon Sound Cleveland,” writes Zachary Lewis in Friday’s (5/31) Plain Dealer (Cleveland). “Attend even one of the festival’s six concerts Thursday through Sunday, June 9, at the Bop Stop at the Music Settlement and several local galleries, and you’re guaranteed to hear something new…. Noa Even, a saxophone professor at Kent State University and the executive director of Uncommon Sound Cleveland … and Uncommon Sound co-founder Sophie Benn are featuring … structured, improvised drumming with electronics, film excerpts accompanied by piano, and artists exploring acoustics, silence, the human voice and ambient sound…. Even and Benn founded Uncommon Sound [in 2018] to fill what they perceived as a major gap…. Blessed with a vibrant jazz scene and world-class orchestras and music schools, Cleveland is teeming with talent, much of it dedicated to the new. Problem is, Even said, there’s little in the way of collaboration or cross-genre communication…. ‘We’re trying to get people to come to something they don’t know,’ Even said. ‘Once they’re here … they’ll be open to having that experience again.’ ”
