Ohio’s Canton Symphony Orchestra has chosen nine students for its new Orchestrating Change Leadership Program, designed to develop leadership and professional skills that participants can bring to the workforce. The students—undergraduates at Cleveland State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Akron, University of Mount Union, Baldwin Wallace University, The Ohio State University, Capital University, and Miami University—are Valerie Mathis, Elyssa Allen, Halle Robinson, Samaria Hill, Carmen Mario Chick, Irene Guggenheim-Triana, Emma Fleischaker, Sarah Carter, and Eva Reyes-Smith. The program was established “to further the mission of the Orchestrating Change podcast by creating programming to realize change within the Canton Symphony and the field of classical music,” the orchestra says in a press release. Students gather virtually twice a week from June 1 to August 12 to analyze the contents of the Canton Symphony’s Orchestrating Change podcast. Participants will create new programs, initiatives, educational projects, and other content to promote diversity and equity in classical music. They attend lectures and Q&A sessions with podcast guests as well as industry professionals.
