In Sunday’s (3/20) San Diego Union-Tribune, James Chute writes, “With its highly touted 100th-anniversary Centennial Season winding down, the San Diego Symphony is looking toward building on the season’s financial and artistic success. The orchestra’s 2011-12 Jacobs Masterworks Series, announced today, continues to be grounded in the core classical repertory, but is more forward-thinking than last year’s offerings in its inclusion of several innovative, themed programs. At the same time, the orchestra is extending its Centennial Campaign, which has raised approximately $27 million, into Year 101 and beyond. The orchestra has set a new goal of $150 million; it already includes $100 million of the $120 million in gifts and bequests donated by Joan and Irwin Jacobs in 2002 and the $27 million donated during the Centennial, leaving $23 million still to be raised. … The 2011-12 season includes appearances by the top rank of classical performers, including Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Cho-Liang Lin, among others. The programming, while it features symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Mahler, Bruckner and Tchaikovsky, also includes thematic programs like the May 4-6, 2012, rhapsody-themed program with pianist Jon Kimura Parker performing Rachmaninoff’s ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini’ and Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue.’ ”
