In Wednesday’s (5/4) Omaha World-Herald (Nebraska), Bob Fischbach reports, “The Omaha Symphony has named James M. Johnson its new president and chief executive officer, effective June 1. Johnson has been CEO of the New York Pops for more than 10 years. … Johnson said he was impressed during his visits to Omaha. … He will move to Omaha later this month with his wife, Jennifer Katz, and daughters Hannah, 11, and Maya, 6. … Johnson, 47, said he would take some time to settle in before setting specific goals for the orchestra. ‘Speaking generally, I’d like the symphony do more to reach out to the broader community, to get beyond the concert hall,’ he said. ‘The educational programs in place now are outstanding. I’d like to capitalize on that and do more. I think it’s important Omahans see the symphony as a resource, not just a cultural jewel but something that has meaning in everyday life.’ Thomas Wilkins, the Omaha Symphony’s music director, said he was impressed with Johnson’s energy and engaging personality, which he said were essential ingredients ‘in leading this organization into the new decade toward its 100th year.’ ”
