The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra is hosting “Play Me, I’m Yours,” a three-week-long art installation this spring featuring 30 decorated pianos in 30 locations throughout Los Angeles County. The pianos will be on display April 12 through May 3 and are available for the public to play at any time during the three weeks. “Play Me, I’m Yours”—which has toured 22 cities since 2008—comes at the end of LACO’s season-long celebration of Jeffrey Kahane’s 15th anniversary as music director. To launch the event, on April 12 at noon local musicians and LACO Composer-in-Residence Derek Bermel will all perform Preludes from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 on all 30 pianos. Other events will take place during the three weeks in downtown L.A., the San Gabriel Valley/Foothills, Santa Monica/Westside, Hollywood/Mid-City, South L.A./Harbor, Eastside, and the San Fernando Valley. Among the designers of the pianos is muralist Kent Twitchell, who painted the massive mural “Harbor Freeway Overture,” featuring LACO musicians, on the 110 Freeway in downtown L.A. 20 years ago.
