In Monday’s (6/3) Houston Chronicle, Steven Brown writes that 28-year-old clarinetist Moran Katz has won top prize in the Houston Symphony’s annual Ima Hogg Competition. The Israeli-born clarinetist “won not only the top prize in the Houston Symphony’s annual contest, but two others,” the $1,000 audience-choice prize and a $1,000 prize voted on by orchestra members…. “The top prize was increased to $25,000 from last year’s $5,000 thanks to a donation from John and Sandy Dennis in honor of John’s grandmother. Katz, who came to the United States to study at the Juilliard School, is a resident of New York. The other winners: Pianist Vladimir Khomyakov, a native of Ukraine who is a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, won the $10,000 second-place prize.… Pianist Min Jung Kim, a native of South Korea who lives in Minneapolis, won the third-place award of $5,000. Violinist Elizabeth Fayette, a New Yorker and the only U.S. native among the finalists, took the $1,000 fourth-place award.”
