Interlochen Arts Academy, the fine-arts boarding school at Interlochen (Mich.) Center for the Arts, has announced the appointment of CAROLYN WATSON as director of the Arts Academy Orchestra, and STEPHANIE ARADO as lead instructor in the academy’s violin studio.

Watson was most recently conductor-in-residence at the Conservatorium High School in Sydney, Australia, and has held conducting posts with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music. Recipient of the 2013 Brian Stacey Award for emerging Australian conductors and the 2008 Sir Charles Mackerras Conducting Prize, she has worked with numerous leading orchestras and opera companies in Australia and Europe, and has served as assistant to conductors Marin Alsop and Charles Mackerras. Watson was a conducting fellow at Aspen Music Festival and School and holds a Ph.D in conducting from the Conservatorium of Music.

Violinist Stephanie Arado goes to Interlochen following a lengthy tenure as assistant concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra. Prior to that she was concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Arado is also an active chamber musician and longtime member of the Bakken Trio, which she co-founded. She has taught at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, coached the Minnesota Youth Symphony, and taught privately in the Minneapolis area. An Interlochen alumna, Arado attended The Juilliard School as a student of Dorothy Delay, then studied with Almita and Roland Vamos before returning to Juilliard to study with Paul Kantor.
