The San Francisco Symphony has announced the appointment of NICK WINTER as director of artistic planning, effective September 24. He succeeds JOHN MANGUM, who departed the SFS in June to become president of California’s Orange County Philharmonic Society. Winter has served as director of artistic administration at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2009. Prior to that he was general manager of the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He also spent six years as artistic administrator of the European Opera Centre, a training program for young singers, and has worked in the broadcast field, earning a Sony Radio Award for his BBC series “Music of the Motherland,” which charted the history of 20th-century Russian music. Winter began his arts management career at the U.K.’s Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts.
