The University of Michigan has announced details of “Enlarging the Circle: Creating Partnerships in Research and Performance,” a summit meeting on January 27 and 28, 2010 at the university’s Ann Arbor campus. The goal of the event—organized by Joseph Horowitz, University of Michigan Professor Mark Clague, and Michael Mauskapf—is to bring together arts presenters, orchestra leaders, and academics to explore partnerships and strategies for challenges faced by orchestras today. Among the orchestras who will participate in panel discussions are the Pittsburgh Symphony (Larry Tamburri), Louisville Orchestra (Rob Birman), Memphis Symphony (Ryan Fleur), Philadelphia Orchestra (Ayden Adler), New York Philharmonic (Barbara Haws), Reno Philharmonic (Laura Jackson, Tim Young), Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (Mary Steffek-Blaske), and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (Anne Parsons). Glenn Watkins will moderate a 90-minute conversation with Pierre Boulez; panel discussions will include topics such as “Sustainable Partnerships: What Works?,” “Thinking Outside the Box: Organizational Structures and Strategies,” and “The American Orchestra in 2010: National, Regional, and Local Perspectives.” There will be two concerts at the Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan, one by the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra on January 26 and one by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on January 27.
