“The Cleveland Orchestra has a new executive director,” writes Zachary Lewis in Monday’s (8/3) Plain Dealer (Cleveland). “On Monday, the orchestra announced that André Gremillet … will succeed Gary Hanson, who is retiring in October after 27 years.… ‘The Cleveland Orchestra represents the brightest example of what a great orchestra should be in the 21st century,’ said Gremillet. ‘It truly is an honor to be appointed its next executive director.’ ” Gremillet “has served as managing director of [Australia’s] Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since November 2012… [He] brings from there experience doing much of what the Cleveland Orchestra is still in the midst of doing here: connecting more deeply with its hometown while simultaneously raising its profile worldwide.… Gremillet, a native of Quebec, had a five-year term as president of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra” and “spent four years as president of Casavant Freres, one of the world’s most distinguished organ builders. A trained pianist, the administrator holds degrees from the Mannes College of Music and Canada’s McGill University. Gremillet’s duties in Cleveland commence in October, after Hanson’s retirement. However, Hanson has said he plans to stay on for a period beyond October, to help acclimate the candidate he said Monday was the best choice.”
