The Rubin Institute for Music Criticism has announced its fifth biennial symposium at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to take place October 15–19. Founded in 2011 by Stephen Rubin, the Rubin Institute works to advance classical music journalism. The program selects student writers from colleges and conservatories across the country to participate in five days of writing workshops, performances, and public sessions with professional music critics. All expenses are paid for the selected participants. The participants review concerts by San Francisco performing arts groups, and the professional music journalists critique their work in public and private sessions. The Institute culminates with the awarding of the $10,000 Rubin Prize in Music Criticism to the participant who demonstrates exceptional promise in music criticism. The runner-up receives an award of $1,000, and both prizes are intended to help further writers’ careers in the field of music journalism. Institute graduates have gone on to write for publications such as The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and Symphony magazine, among others.
