The American Composers Orchestra in New York City has appointed GEORGE MANAHAN music director, effective next season. He will lead all three of the ACO’s 2010-11 concerts presented by Carnegie Hall in its Zankel Hall venue, while continuing as music director of New York City Opera, where he is now in his twelfth season. Manahan most recently conducted the ACO in February 2009, premiering works by Margaret Brouwer, Rand Steiger, and Fang Man. In 2006 he led workshops and performances of music by emerging composers in the ACO’s Underwood New Music Readings, and will return in May of this year for the 2010 Underwood readings. In addition to taking up the ACO post next fall Manahan will join the Manhattan School of Music faculty as director of orchestral studies. He has conducted many of the leading U.S. orchestras and opera companies, and was music director of the Richmond (Virginia) Symphony for twelve years. Early in his career Manahan served as Exxon Arts Endowment conductor at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
