The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of ANDRIS POGA to a two-year term as assistant conductor beginning with the 2012-13 season. He will share duties with Marcelo Lehninger, who was appointed in 2010 to an assistant conductor post at the BSO. A native of Latvia, Poga has been a regular conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra since 2007. From 2007 to 2010 he was chief conductor of Latvia’s Riga Professional Symphonic Band, and in 2011 he became assistant conductor to Paavo Järvi at the Orchestre de Paris. Winner of the Latvia Great Music Award in 2007, he was also awarded first prize in the 2010 Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Montpellier, France. Poga graduated from the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music in 2004 with a degree in conducting. He also studied philosophy at the University of Latvia, and from 2004 to2005 studied conducting with Uros Lajovic at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts.
