The Juilliard School in New York City has announced the appointment of conductor DAVID ROBERTSON as director of conducting studies, distinguished visiting faculty. He will be the principal teacher for all conducting degree students at the school, and will teach private lessons, a regular studio class, and work with students as they conduct the Juilliard Lab Orchestra. He will work with three or four students per academic year and will audition prospective students. In addition, he will select students to accompany him and assist at his orchestral engagements. Robertson will conduct one major concert annually with the Juilliard Orchestra. Robertson is currently in his valedictory season as music director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and in his fifth season as chief conductor and artistic director of Australia’s Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He is a frequent guest conductor at leading opera companies and orchestras, and previously served in artistic leadership positions with institutions including the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris, and as principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Robertson, who succeeds Alan Gilbert as head of the Juilliard conducting program, begins his appointment in the fall of 2018.
