What is RSS?

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) provides a way for content to be distributed across the Internet. RSS Feeds permit a reader to subscribe to regular updates of content from a variety of tools including Web portals and news readers. Examples include Google Reader, MyYahoo!, Bloglines , AOL, My MSN, etc.

This handy web tool, which you can set yourself, will tell you when we have posted new material on The Hub.

If you want a feed reading program that runs on your own computer, there are a few options. But first you need to make sure your web browser is compatible. You need to be running at least Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or Internet Explorer 7, on PCs. Apple Macintosh users have built-in support for feeds in the Safari web browser.

You can download compatible browsers by clicking on the bolded links above.

If You Use…?

Click on the following links to set up your own feed (based on which email provider you use):
Yahoo, Google, MSN, or AOL; and read feeds right within the home page that their browser starts in. Other providers of web-based feed readers include Rojo, Bloglines, Attensa Online, or NewsGator Online. All of the web-based services are free.

If you want a separate program to read feeds, you can use FeedDemon or NewsGator for Microsoft Outlook if you’re on Microsoft Windows. Both tools let you switch between these programs and the web-based reader at any time. If you’re on a Macintosh running OS X, the most popular feed reader is NetNewsWire, which can also connect to the web-based services.

ABOUT INDUSTRY BUZZ

Industry Buzz, edited by Jennifer Melick, draws primarily from press releases submitted by League members. Industry Buzz announces important news, unusual concert programs, awards, and other information you need to stay on top of what’s happening in our industry.

Submission guidelines: Industry Buzz covers all types of notable orchestral activity, including major grants, education programs, repertoire ideas, or recording projects. Stories of national or compelling interest are given priority.

To be considered for Industry Buzz, please send press releases and photographs (with appropriate captions and credits) to orchnews@americanorchestras.org or jmelick@americanorchestras.org

Bear in mind that hundreds of press releases from member orchestras and publicists come our way each week. Since our editorial staff pools all press releases, a single release to Symphony or orchnews@americanorchestras.org is sufficient.

ABOUT MEDIA VIEW

Media View emphasizes news and features and occasionally includes reviews, opinion pieces, and obituaries of note. Because reviews are numerous and highly specific to their local market, they are normally included only if they involve a debut, commission/premiere, or programming focus of compelling interest.

Media View is meant to accurately reflect what is being said in the media about orchestras and the issues surrounding them. Stories of national and compelling interest are given priority, and the need for brevity, balanced against the news “load” on a given day, has a role in determining what is covered.

Views and opinions referenced are those of the reporters and critics cited, and are not to be taken as the views of the League. The League takes no responsibility for the opinions, views, or reporting of writers whose articles are digested in Media View.

Submission guidelines:
If you have an article you would like to see considered for Media View, please paste the text of the article into the body of an email with a link to its online source and send it to: orchnews@americanorchestras.org and editor@americanorchestras.org. Send the article on the day it is published if at all possible; to keep The Hub timely, we generally refrain from featuring articles that are more than three days old.

ABOUT WHO’S IN

Who’s In, edited by Robert Sandla, announces artistic and administrative appointments, key changes in board leadership, and notable retirements at orchestras and related organizations.

Submission guidelines:
To be considered for Who’s In, please send personnel-related press releases and photographs (with appropriate captions and credits) to: orchnews@americanorchestras.org or bsandla@americanorchestras.org.

Orchestras Feeding America National Food Drive

Food_Drive2_sb.png
1 in 8 people in our country don’t know where their next meal is coming from. In response to this critical situation, the League is calling on our members to join together for an unprecedented effort by orchestras across the country, March 27-28, 2009.

Inspired by the film The Soloist, in theaters April 24, the League is partnering with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, to unite our field and become a catalyst for change.

Making a difference to those in need couldn’t be easier. The League will partner you with a local Feeding America agency and provide ready-to-use materials for organizing your food drive. All you have to do is collect the contributions!

Through the generosity of our Institutional Vision funders, selected orchestras are supported via virtually full scholarship support.
