Germany’s Beethovenfest, held this year from September 10 to October 9, will feature the European debuts of the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and Sinfônica Heliópolis, the national youth orchestra of Brazil. Christian Vásquez will lead the Venezuelan orchestra in Wagner’s Overture to Rienzi, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12; Roberto Tibiricá will lead the Brazilian orchestra in the world premiere of André Mehmari’s Cicade do Sol, as well as works of Beethoven and Brazilian composers. The U.S.-based orchestra The Knights will perform a program of Beethoven, Piazzolla, and Golijov, as well as Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 and a cello arrangement of Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun,” with cellist Jan Vogler. Paavo Järvi will lead two programs of Beethoven and Schumann with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen; the same orchestra, led by Peter Ruzicka, will perform the world premiere of Ruzicka’s own concerto for cello and orchestra. Other orchestras scheduled to perform at the four-week festival include the Bavarian State Orchestra, Capella Andrea Barca, the Orchestre National de France, and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. The theme of this year’s festival is “Into the Open,” focusing on the beginning of the nineteenth century as a period of social upheaval that left its mark on Beethoven’s works.
