“My good fortune in being music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra extends beyond Symphony Hall into the wider community,” writes BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons in a Sunday (11/16) opinion column in the Boston Globe. “It is crucial that Boston nurtures its artistic standing by finding new, vital ways to bring the arts to even more people in Boston….I imagine the BSO and the city of Boston working closely together to engage people in all of the city’s brilliantly diverse neighborhoods with the orchestra’s many programs—both at Symphony Hall and out in the community—really so that everyone would have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music. Beyond the city itself, the BSO—one of Boston’s greatest cultural ambassadors—represents the very best of Boston through its touring throughout the world. In this line of thinking, the BSO and the city must further join forces to explore opportunities to inspire ever-increasing interest and passion in this magnificent city.” In the November 14 issue of the Globe, Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Julie Burros, the city’s newly appointed chief of arts and culture, write about how they plan to integrate the arts into the lives of the community.
