A woodwind quintet from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra performs in Principal Cello Alan Black’s backyard as part of the orchestra’s Al Fresco series.

In North Carolina, the Charlotte Symphony’s al Fresco virtual concert series will return on July 23 with the first of four free summer concerts, each featuring a different ensemble of Charlotte Symphony musicians. Principal Cello Alan Black hosts the concerts, which take place in his backyard in Charlotte, and speaks with musicians about the music and their lives as performing artists. The July 23 program will feature music by Dvořák, played by Black on cello; violinists Oliver Kot, Carlos Tarazona, Joseph Meyer, Jenny Topilow; violist Ning Zhao; and Bill Congdon on harmonium. Additional concerts on August 6, August 20, and September 3 will feature string, woodwind, and brass musicians performing music by Bach, Bax, Debussy, Victor Ewald, Fauré, Gabrieli, Poulenc, Price, Coleridge-Taylor, Miguel del Aguila, Lauren Bernofsky, and Fats Waller. Concerts are free on Facebook and YouTube every other Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET; afterward, concerts will be available on demand at charlottesymphony.org/csoalfresco.
