In Monday’s (12/15) Cincinnati Enquirer (Ohio), Janelle Gelfand writes that Cincinnati’s MusicNOW Festival “will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a five-day festival, which will include the debut of the indie rock band The National with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in Music Hall. The festival, to take place March 11-15, will also feature performances by Perfume Genius, So Percussion, The Lone Bellow and Cincinnati’s concert:nova ensemble.… Last year, music director Louis Langrée and the Cincinnati Symphony … collaborated with the cutting-edge MusicNOW Festival for the first time. Two different programs matched up rock-inspired world premieres against classical masterpieces in Music Hall. MusicNOW was founded in 2006 by Cincinnati-born Bryce Dessner of The National with the mission to present contemporary music, commission new works and offer artists an opportunity to take risks. In the last decade, MusicNOW has evolved from its indie-rock roots to include some of the biggest names in new music, including the Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass, Steve Reich and the new music sextet eighth blackbird…. For this year’s event, the festival has commissioned pieces from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason. In addition, composer Nico Muhly will be returning.”
