“The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is launching its own record label,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Sunday’s (10/3) Cincinnati Enquirer. “The first disc on the new Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Media label will be ‘American Portraits,’ an album of American music celebrating Paavo Järvi’s 10th season as music director. It will be released this fall. The album was compiled from live performances in Music Hall. It consists of concert recordings of pieces by American composers Charles Coleman, Jennifer Higdon, Carter Pann, Jonathan Holland and Kevin Puts. ‘My idea was to take some of the American composers that we have either premiered or performed, and put those performances on a disc,’ says Järvi. ‘Once you do a premiere, often it’s the only time the piece is played. Now, once the CD comes out … it allows those who are interested in American composers to get to know some of those pieces, and it also documents some of our activities that we did in Cincinnati.’ It is Järvi’s 17th album with the CSO. The project was funded by Cincinnati arts patrons Farah and John Palmer. … The disc was engineered by Michael Bishop of Five/Four Productions, made up of former Telarc staff.”
