“Inaugurated in 1962, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition put Fort Worth on the classical-music map,” writes Scott Cantrell in Thursday’s (5/23) Dallas Morning News. “Held every four years, it draws pianists ages 18 to 30 from around the world for cash prizes and career assistance. In ‘off’ years, the Cliburn has added two other piano competitions: one for pianists 13 to 17, and another for amateurs. In another innovation, this year’s Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition is coming to Dallas, starting May 31. The first three rounds will be at Southern Methodist University’s Caruth Auditorium. The final round, comprising concerto performances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, led by former assistant conductor Ruth Reinhardt, will be at the Meyerson Symphony Center. The entire competition will be webcast live at cliburn.org…. 24 pianists were selected to compete for $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 prizes, plus scholarships and community residencies and mentorship opportunities…. A distinguished jury will be chaired by Alessio Bax. Fourteen additional young pianists have been invited to observe the competition and participate in master classes…. The final round also will be simulcast on large screens at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.”
