Michigan’s Lansing Symphony Orchestra has announced details of its upcoming young composers’ competition, and the Paducah Symphony in Kentucky is now accepting applications for its next young artists’ competition. For the Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s fifth annual Young Composers Competition, Michigan residents between ages nine and eighteen may submit scores for orchestral compositions between three and five minutes in length; the deadline for submissions is January 10, 2010. Compositions must be for string orchestra at a minimum, but may also include brass, woodwind, and percussion. The winning composition will be performed by the Lansing Symphony Orchestra at its April 18, 2010 concert, and a cash prize will be awarded. The application deadlines for the Paducah Symphony’s eighteenth annual Young Artists Competition is December 11, 2009 (instrumentalists) and December 26, 2009 (pianists). Two winners will receive cash awards of $500 or more each and will perform at the Paducah Symphony’s April 17, 2010 concert.
