“The union for the San Antonio Symphony musicians announced Thursday it has reached a contract extension agreement with the San Antonio Symphony Society lasting through the end of the year to ensure the orchestra will start its 2017-18 season on time next month,” writes David Hendricks in Thursday’s (8/24) San Antonio Express-News (Texas). “The agreement extends the terms of the 2015-17 contract that would have expired Aug. 31. The contract terms include a 30-week season and a minimum base pay of $1,120 a week for the 72-member orchestra. Although the musicians’ contract extension is with the San Antonio Symphony Society, a new nonprofit organization formed this summer called Symphonic Music for San Antonio will begin operating the orchestra and its upcoming season Sept. 1, as announced in July.… Negotiations for a new musicians’ contract will continue during the fall as the concert season starts. Talks are scheduled to resume in meetings scheduled on Sept. 25 and Sept. 27, [Tom Stephenson, SMSA executive director] said. A new contract will begin before Dec. 31 if an agreement is reached before that date. The musicians begin rehearsals Sept. 13 for the season’s first concert on Sept. 16 … at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.”
