The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra in Michigan has announced that it will host a presentation entitled “El Sistema: Music for Social Change” on August 11. Dan Trahey, artistic director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s El Sistema-inspired OrchKids program, will speak at Kalamazoo’s Epic Theater at 3 p.m. about his travels to Venezuela and his experiences co-founding and directing OrchKids. In addition to his work with OrchKids, Trahey co-founded and performs on the tuba in the nonprofit music education ensemble The Archipelago Project and mentors students at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. El Sistema is the Venezuelan orchestra training program that uses music education as a vehicle for social change.
