The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has announced a new five-year, $8 million addition to its grantmaking in support of the performing arts. In celebration of the foundation’s fiftieth anniversary, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commissions will enable San Francisco Bay Area nonprofits to work with artists from around the world to create and premiere new works of performing arts in local communities. This year’s awards will support music composition, with future years focused on theater, dance, folk and traditional arts, and film and media. Grants ranging from $100,000 to $200,000 will support music composition in diverse genres including but not limited to symphonic, contemporary, jazz, world music, and choral music, as well as folk and traditional music. Organizations do not need to be arts producers or presenters, and nonprofits working on diverse issues are eligible to receive grants. An introductory webinar on Thursday, January 26 at 10 a.m. PST will present more information about the initiative and how to apply. Applications are due by April 14.
